Instructions for Canon 6D Full Spectrum Modification using a 6D Astronomik MC Clear Glass

Modification Steps Continued:

40. The black plastic frame holding the original IR cut filter (LPF#2) needs to be removed from the imaging sensor. The plastic frame has an adhesive gasket fixing it to the sensor. Use a chisel type flat blade razor to work along the top and bottom of the filter frame. You can't work the razor under the sides of the filter frame because the 6D has a small edge extending downward toward the sensor. After loosening the top and bottom of the filter frame, start working the razor in the corners and work toward the center of each side's frame. Avoid breaking the IR cut filter glass. It is very thin and breaks easily. If it does break, be careful to clean any glass particles off the sensor so that it is not scratched. Clean the cover glass of sensor under bright light and high magnification to ensure that it is clean.

41. If the sticky gasket material came loose, reapply it inside the black LPF#2 filter frame.

42. Place empty LPF#2 filter frame on sensor. There are two plastic pins at the top of the filter frame that are inserted into two holes in the metal frame of the sensor. Use those as guides when placing the filter frame on the sensor. Press firmly around the perimeter of the frame to be sure the gasket material makes a good seal.

43. Clean the Astronomik MC Clear Glass under bright light and high magnification to ensure that it is clean and free of dust.

44. Place MC Clear Glass on LPF#2 filter frame and fix in place with metal frame and two screws. Make sure the metal frame snaps into place at all four corners:

45. Place the sensor assembly in the camera. Install the three sensor adjustment screws and use the screw marks and gauges made in Steps #30 and #31 to return the screws to their original position.

46. With the Astronomik MC Clear Glass installed and to perfect focus operation, a small adjustment should be made to the three sensor adjustment screws from their original positions. Using a torx driver adjust each sensor adjustment screw clockwise by 1/2 tick as shown in the diagram below. "1/2 tick" is one-half of the distance between the six points at the head of the torx driver. Apply glue to the top of each sensor adjustment screw to hold in place.

 

Reassembly:

Reassembly begins by following the previous directions in reverse beginning with Step 36. Ignore Step 33 because there is no ribbon cable to install, since the piezzoelectric element was removed.

Note from Hap Griffin: "The one place to really be careful is in re-installing the right side of the camera (looking from the rear) as there is a metal tab protecting the SD card slot cover switch that can become jammed if the side piece is installed incorrectly (it’s easy to do and requires a bit of finesse to get it on right without damaging the switch)."
