by Gary Honis

Images were taken with a self-modified Full Spectrum Canon 6D full frame camera. I have a review of the Canon 6D model posted HERE.

Imaging scope used was a 12" Astro-Tech RC telescope using a new Orion HDX110 equatorial GoTo mount. A Youtube video of my Orion HDX110 field setup can be seen HERE.

The EQMOD ASCOM driver was used to drive the HDX110 mount directly via a USB2EQ5 Interface Cable.

Equipment used:

The Orion HDX110 mount was polar aligned at first using the mount's polar align scope and then later tweaked using the drift align function of PHDGuiding 2. During this New Moon period we had 9 clear (useable) nights out of a 13 night stay.

Comet Jacques on 8/18/14:

36 six-minute exposures at ISO 1600 captured with AT12RC at prime using Full Spectrum modified 6D were combined using DeepSkyStacker and reduced in size for display (1200X800). Autoguiding was done on the starfield this first night and the comet moved off the FOV.

Comet Jacques on 8/24/14:

53 six-minute exposures at ISO 1600 captured with AT12RC at prime using Full Spectrum modified 6D were combined using Images Plus and reduced in size for display (1200X800). Autoguiding was done on the comet's nucleus.

Comet Jacques on 8/25/14:

56 six-minute exposures at ISO 1600 captured with AT12RC at prime using Full Spectrum modified 6D were combined using Images Plus and reduced in size for display (1200X800). Autoguiding was done on the comet's nucleus.

Comet Jacques on 8/28/14:

10 six-minute exposures at ISO 1600 captured with AT12RC at prime using Full Spectrum modified 6D were combined using Images Plus and reduced in size for display (1200X800). Autoguiding was done on the comet's nucleus. The comet has a very thin tail extending to the right of the comet's nucleus.

YouTube Video:

I made a time lapse animation using the frames taken over four nights and it covers nearly 17 hours of the comet's movement. The first night I autoguided on the starfield but the comet moved off the FOV. The next three nights I autoguided instead on the comet's nucleus. If you watch the video closely for those nights, you will see as the comet passes in front of bright stars and the autoguider becomes confused and sometimes picks up the star for guiding instead:
