Removal of IR Cut Filter for Astrophotography

7. For the 450D and 1000D, carefully pry case apart starting from the bottom side of the camera. ***500D: For 500D only, see Step 7A. ***550D & ***1100D:: For 550D and 1100D, see Step 7B. ***600D: For 600D skip this step and follow procedure HERE instead.

7A. ***500D only: Remove the port cover by pulling it off. It is held on with a soft rubber strap that is hooked on the end. Remove two screws as shown below and the camera back can then be pryed off.

7B. ***550D & ***1100D: Remove two small screws as shown below. Plastic port cover and rubber piece can now be removed from camera body and set aside in sealed container. The camera back can now be pryed off. (Photo of 550D is shown)

8. Note that there is only one ribbon cable connecting the back of the camera. ***1100D only: 1100D has two ribbon cables - see insert below.

9. Remove ribbon cable(s) from its connector. Note that this is a "hinge type" connector. Use a small flat head jeweler's driver to flip up the black part of the connector(s) which is hinged so that it moves up and away from the ribbon cable allowing the ribbon cable to be removed: You can see a how a similar hinged connector is opened in Step 12-B below. ***550D only: The 550D's ribbon cable is attached to the connector on the opposite side from the black hinge, as shown in Photo 9B below. ***1100D only: The blue ribbon cable has a similar type connector.

Here is a photo of a typical and much larger "hinged type" connector that shows how the connector is flipped up to allow removal of the ribbon cable. To install a ribbon cable, the cable would be placed into position and the hinge snapped down to hold the cable in place.

Photo 9B ***550D only:

10. Remove the port cover by pulling it off. It is held on with a soft rubber strap that is hooked on the end. ***500D & 550D & 1100D: Note this has already been removed in Step 7A or 7B.

11. For 450D & 1000D remove three screws as shown below: ***500D: See step 11A instead. ***500D & 1100D: See step 11B instead.

11A. ***500D: Remove four screws as shown below:

11B. ***550D & 1100D: Remove five screws at the locations shown below (550D used for photo):

12. In the photo below, the ribbon cable connectors are labeled "A" through "J" for reference. We will disconnect all of these ribbon cables in the next steps. ***500D: The 500D has a single cable labeled "C" instead of the cables labeled "C" and "D" below. See Figure 12A.

***550D: For the 550D, skip this step and continue with the steps HERE instead.

***1100D: For the 1100D, skip this step and continue with the steps HERE instead.

Note that ribbon cable connectors "I" and "J" are located under ribbon cables "G" and "H". A suggestion was made by Oz, that a fine point Sharpie be used to draw a line on the ribbon cables at the edge of the ribbon cable connector before removing the ribbon cables from the connectors. This would be a indicator to check that the ribbon is fully seated and squared correctly upon reassembly.

Comment by Gary: Oz's suggestion is to avoid a problem experienced by a few modifiers of the camera not powering up after modification because a ribbon cable was not fully seated in its connector.

Figure 12A. ***500D only:

A. This is a "slider" type of ribbon cable connector, not a "hinged" type. Insert a toothpick in the small hole in the ribbon cable and wiggle the cable gently from side to side as you apply pressure away from the connector to pull the ribbon cable out of the connector:

B. This is a hinged type connector as we opened in Step 9. Use a small flat head jeweler's driver to flip up the brown part of the connector which is hinged so that it moves up and away from the ribbon cable allowing the ribbon cable to be removed:

C. This is a "slider" type of ribbon cable connector. Insert a toothpick in the small hole in the ribbon cable and wiggle the cable gently from side to side as you apply pressure away from the connector to pull the ribbon cable out of the connector.

D. This is a hinged type connector. Use a small flat head jeweler's driver to flip up the brown part of the connector which is hinged so that it moves up and away from the ribbon cable allowing the ribbon cable to be removed. ***500D: The 500D has no cable labeled "D".

E. This is a "pop off" (plug type) connector. Lift it off with a tooth pick or your fingernail:

F, G, H & I: These are hinged type connectors. Use a small flat head jeweler's driver to flip up the dark part of the connector which is hinged so that it moves up and away from the ribbon cable allowing the ribbon cable to be removed.

All the ribbon cables "A" through "I" have now been disconnected, continue with dessassembly steps on next page.
